Job Description
The assistant director of student success and the first year experience assists in developing, implementing, and assessing first year initiatives. This individual works closely with the assistant dean of student success and the first year experience to fulfill the goals of the office and honor the mission of the university while positively impacting the experience of first-year students. The assistant director works with curricular, transition, and support programs and works collaboratively with a wide range of offices and academic departments. This is a twelve-month position and includes evening and weekend commitments.

(E) - Essential function
- Assist in the overall management of the Office of Student Success and the First Year Experience and work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and family members. (E)
- Recruit, hire, select, train, supervise, and evaluate undergraduate student staff. Develop, manage, and facilitate training curriculum through the university e-learning platform. (E)
- Assistant in overseeing payroll processes for all student employees (graduate and undergraduate) including budget management. (E)
- Provide administrative oversight for academic learning communities and assist with management of first year seminars; includes faculty and student recruitment, structural development, marketing, enrollment, and implementation. (E)
- Develop and facilitate professional development workshops for faculty and staff related to teaching first-year focused academic initiatives (learning communities and first year seminars) and general first-year student needs.
- Utilize university early warning and retention software to follow up on student referrals, analyze student trends and concerns, and coordinate/monitor outreach to students. (E)
- Provide leadership in the development and implementation of programmatic initiatives designed to assist first-year students in their transition into and through the university. (E)
- Advise Alpha Lambda Delta, the first year honor society on campus including organizing member recruitment and managing organizational budget and scholarship processes, and facilitating programs and events.
- Coordinate and collaborate with academic departments and offices in the development and implementation of initiatives/programs geared toward first-year student success. (E)
- Collaborate with the Center for Civic Engagement to implement the First Year Day of Service.
- Collaborate with all staff in Student Success and the First Year Experience on implementing programs and services (including but not limited to the exploratory program, first-generation success center, and individual coaching programs.) (E)
- Manage and maintain social media outlets, first year experience websites, and internal web content including the development and scheduling of institutional deadlines and reminders.
- Develop and maintain staff manuals and online project management and training/support systems.
- Develop and implement programmatic and student experience assessment efforts. Collaborate with Institutional Effectiveness to analyze and interpret university-wide assessment efforts related to first year students. Communicate assessment data to relevant stakeholders.
- Assist in the recruitment, hiring, selecting, training and supervision of graduate staff including practicum students. (E)
- Represent the Student Success and the First Year Experience Office at January and Summer Orientation sessions, Open Houses, Accepted Student Days, and other relevant events. (E)
- Assist in managing the first year experience budget.
- Represent the assistant dean in their absence. (E)
- Serve on various university committees and ad hoc committees as assigned.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to students, faculty, and staff of varying racial, ethnic, religious, gender, gender identity disability, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic backgrounds and learning styles.
- Serves as a positive role model and mentor for students and staff.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree
- Two to four years of professional work experience at a college/university
- Experience working with first-year student populations and/or demonstrated knowledge of current research, tehory, and best practices related to first-year students and/or retention programs
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree
- Previous experience working with diverse populations
- Previous supervisory experience
- Excellent organizational, planning, and management skills
- Abiilty to solve problems and handle multiple tasks and priorities
- Experience developing and presenting training workshops or programs/activities

Office activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and interaction with computer equipment; occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 5-10 pounds.
Ability to work a flexible schedule according to departmental needs, which may include occasional evenings and weekends.
